Costume for Change

The Welly Walk Dress

Spring, 2021

I was so delighted that my design was selected for the Costume for Change competition back in the beginning of 2021.

The competition brief encouraged students to create costumes that had a positive effect on the environment. Considering the use of recycled, sustainable and "green" fabrics and materials.

I chose to take part in this competition because I have always been interested with the natural world and eco-friendly art. More recently, the devastating effects of the fashion industry has been brought to light, and it is more important than ever to encourage sustainability across all art forms and in our everyday life.

The realisation of the dress took place during the summer. Myself and a small team of makers created the costume, which will be available to view in an exhibition at Arts University Bournemouth in the near future.

“It’s really great to see a sustainability design focusing on the positive. The joy and wonder of nature. Also good to see the next generation mentioned and ideas on after primary—use. It made me smile throughout.”

“I can completely imagine wearing this dress and being the character! I think it’s a beautiful, clear idea about connecting our next generation to nature. It’s very well realised.”
